Describe Feature
I want to be able to format and put whatever text I want in the tooltips. For weaker chart readers, I like to have sentences. For instance, “Product X grew by 25% over previous period”. Also many of the current tooltips are placing information in the tip that is too much. Maps at the Lat/Lng level show the lat/lng numbers, no one needs to see that. Multiple Line Charts tooltips are just absolutely dreadful. When I hover over a line I don’t want to see the data for all the other lines at that point. I want to see that line at that point. -

What is the impact of this feature on your organization?
Able to provide much better and more targeted information for my dashboard users. Many of whom are not very strong at reading charts, but they can read the tooltips as a way to learn how to read the charts better.
Yes–the ability to control every data point in a tooltip would be very helpful, especially if a helper column is being used to sort the data
Completely agree, I think tooltips in Sigma right now are very overwhelming and not very helpful. I think adding sentences/formulas would be super helpful, and showing the single point vs all points makes more sense. I’d also add, having the ability to turn off tooltips could be helpful too (in case the tooltip doesn’t add anything new).
Finally, Tableau provides the ability to add a whole chart into a tooltip. I think that would be pretty cool, or maybe at least provide a button option to send you to a different chart.
I’d really like to see column totals in tool tips - values for each color category with the aggregate at the bottom (or top…).
Agreed. A) Text is small and hard to read. B) Sometimes I want the main Dimension name as a title for the bar that I’m hovering over. It’s really hard to run a tooltip over several bars and quickly get a read on “which bar am I on” and “what’s the main metric?”
Tooltips are a replacer for labels when you have a lot of bars/lines, and when they’re hard to read it makes it nearly impossible to meaningfully interact with the chart.
+1 for viz-in-tooltips, and for the ability to turn them off. Just make a text editor option.
Heyy All!
Two interesting things re: tooltips
-
did you know you could elect to not show values in the tooltip? Im my screenshot below ive selected the y axis value and can uncheck show in tooltip! This can also be done with the x axis value!
-
I can add a new tooltip and input a string to make it say Anything I want it to say.
Take this one step further and make it dynamic!
There’s another issue with ToolTips when it comes to Combo charts - some Y-Axis values are hidden if they are behind a value shown as Area:
In this example I can hover over the Delivery Count and Outflow Other series, but not the Outflow BPO for the same date.
It would be good if hovering over any X-axis value would show all the Y-axis series values, as Sigma does for other categorized charts, like this:
This is brilliant. It never crossed my mine to build the text as a column and then include it in the tooltip.
Also thanks for alerting me to the “Show in Tooltips” this will make a big difference.
Same! I love this!
